About
The Mondulkiri fonts provide Unicode support for the Khmer script.
Styles
There are four main fonts available. Their names are geographical: ‘Mondulkiri’ and ‘Ratanakiri’ are two provinces in north-eastern Cambodia, while ‘Busra’ and ‘Oureang’ are places in Mondulkiri province.
Khmer Mondulkiri is a very light font with separately designed shapes for italic, bold, and bold italic. It is well suited for very small print. Khmer Mondulkiri also works on Mac OS X.
Khmer Busra is probably the best font for all normal text. The font has separately designed shapes for italic, bold and bold italic. This font was formerly named ‘Khmer Mondulkiri book’ and the bold font was named ‘Khmer Mondulkiri semibold’. The name change was mainly due to the fact that the font name was too long for some programs. Khmer Busra also works on Mac OS X.
Khmer Oureang is an extra bold font useful for headings. This font was formerly named ‘Khmer Mondulkiri ultra.’
Khmer Ratanakiri is a Mool (or Muol or Muul) font, which is frequently used for headings and signs. At this point of time most ligatures have not yet been implemented. Some coengs of independent vowels and other features used only infrequently in normal Khmer text are currently still implemented in a different character style. This font does not support more than one below‐coeng.
Supported Character Ranges
All of the Mondulkiri family of fonts (Khmer Mondulkiri, Khmer Busra, Khmer Oureang, and Khmer Ratanakiri) contain all Khmer and all basic Latin characters. The choice of characters included is based on the personal decision of the designer. All glyphs outside the Khmer Unicode range are provided only to help with mixed text. A utility such as SIL ViewGlyph can be used to examine the exact repertoire of these fonts.
System Requirements
The Mondulkiri fonts are designed to work on systems and with applications that provide support for OpenType fonts and for Unicode character encoding. Khmer support requires a version of Uniscribe that is equal to or greater than 1.626.5756.0.
The fonts have been minimally tested to work on Pango as well.
Keyboarding
A Keyman keyboard created by the designer of these fonts is available here.

Changes in Mondulkiri and Busra 7.100
Mondulkiri
- The hinting has been improved, making the difference between regular and bold visible on screen in much smaller font sizes than before.
- A few bugs were addressed: the disappearing of glyphs on Mac in certain strings that do not occur in correctly typed text; a positioning problem in some Tampuan words on Mac; one syllable in Bunong text on Windows/Linux.
- Minor changes in diacritic placement, mostly on Mac. Coeng Kho and coeng Ttha were modified.
- Glyphs were added – mostly in the phonetic symbols section. The shaping tables for Mac were streamlined and are now the same as for the Busra font.
Busra
- The fonts now have AAT tables so that they work on Mac OS X.
- Many glyphs were added to make the character range the same as in Mondulkiri 7.100.
- Many glyph shapes and diacritic placements were improved slightly.
- The ligatures of some consonants with the ‘sra-a’, ‘sra-oo’ and ‘sra-ou’ have changed and are now the same as in Mondulkiri.
- The hinting has been improved.
- Most other changes from Mondulkiri 5.300 to 5.513 are now also in Busra 7.100.
- The descender value was changed which may affect line spacing.

Other Resources
The following documents include a wealth of information about the Mondulkiri fonts and how they differ from one another; Khmer orthography and script; plus practical guides to achieve the correct display of Khmer script.
- Typography Options in Mondulkiri Fonts and Quick Guide to Stylistic Sets and Typography Options address options relating to glyph shapes and positioning of some diacritics in the Khmer Mondulkiri and Khmer Busra fonts (but not yet Khmer Oureang, Ratanakiri nor the special variants of Busra).
- Stylistic Sets in Mondulkiri Fonts (and also Quick Guide to Stylistic Sets and Typography Options) give similar guidance for Adobe Creative Suite (CS) 5.5+.
- Quick Guide to Typing Khmer and Differences in the Implementations of Khmer Unicode give details about typing Khmer script on different computer operating systems. For example, in OS X the fonts insert dotted circles similar to the way Windows does, in order to help the user to type ‘correctly’. Correctly typed text (i.e. in pronunciation order, without dotted circles) will look the same in OS X, Windows or Adobe CS. However, a few typing mistakes in text typed in Windows will show dotted circles in OS X (e.g. certain coengs typed after certain vowels).
- The Orthographical Syllable in Khmer and Rules for the Rendering of Register Shifters gives some general considerations of Khmer Unicode, including ideas and suggestions for the implementation of Khmer Unicode in fonts and software.
